When you purchase a plane ticket and the price of that ticket drops, you may be able to claim a refund for the difference. Every airline has a different refund policy, but generally speaking the policies are usually not communicated well to the customer. Find out which airlines have the best policies.
How does it work?
Many airlines offer customers a refund in the event that the price of the ticket drops after they purchase the ticket and before the flight. To qualify for the refund, the price drop has to be for the exact same ticket which means same dates/time, departure city, destination city, airline codes etc.
What’s more, many airlines actually charge you a fee to get the refund. Go figure.
AirTran, Alaska, Southwest, & JetBlue Offer Refunds With No Strings Attached
Southwest & JetBlue have policies that allow you to simply re-book your travel online and get a credit for the difference. This is by far, the most customer friendly policy. AirTran & Southwest are also friendly but you are given a travel voucher for the difference and need to use it within 1 year. Also, you may have to call up the airline and request a credit but these airlines are generally good about giving refunds when ticket prices drop.
American, Continental, United, & Delta Offer a Refund, But For a Fee!
Imagine that, you can get a refund if the price of the ticket you purchased drops, but for an “administrative” fee. Most of the fees are $150 for domestic travel and $250 for international travel. This means that the price drop will have to be larger than the fee to make it worthwhile. And, how often does the price drop more than $150, not very.
