It’s not uncommon for taxpayers to file their tax return with the IRS on April 15th and then forget or misplace their own copy. In the past, the only option to fix this problem was to complete a lengthy questionnaire and then wait 5 to 10 business days to receive a copy in the mail. Finally, the IRS has provided taxpayers with a much easier way to access their prior year tax returns. They can now gain access online through the IRS website and easily get their tax transcript. This new way to access your tax return may not only be helpful for those that misplaced their returns, but perhaps also for those that want to check to see what the IRS has on file for them.
What will my IRS account show?
The account will provide a history of your tax returns, record of account, wage and income, and verification of non-filing. Please note that the tax account transcript will show any adjustments either you or the IRS made after the tax return was filed. Theoretically, this information should be consistent with what you’ve provided in the past. If there happens to be an inconsistency, you should first contact the tax preparer (CPA or Enrolled Agent) that originally filed the return. Then, it may be necessary to contact the IRS.
What information do you need to access your return online?
You’ll need to provide your Social Security number to view and print a copy of your tax transcript. Please note though that you can still request to gain access to your return via mail or using the online tool or for sending in Form 4506T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return.
