Can you file an amendment on your 2008 taxes and still qualify for the homebuyer tax credit?

ANSWER

Expert Michael Lim's Answer:

Absolutely.  The statue of limitations for filing an amendment on a tax return is three years from the original due date of the return.  In this case, since the original due date was April 15, 2009, the last date for filing would be April 15, 2012.

Please read the instructions to Form 5405 to claim the credit (and to make sure you qualify), as well as the instructions to Form 1040X for filing the refund.
