I have two years of income that I haven't paid taxes on. If I get married soon, will my spouse also be liable for that burden?

ANSWER

Expert Linda Burroughs's Answer:

Your spouse is not liable for past taxes that you owe on a single/Separate return.  When married individuals elect to file a joint tax return in the years that they are recognized as married, then both are liable for the taxes due.  If you get married and file a separate return, you are only liable for the amount due on your separate return.
