Can I claim my real estate taxes if I don't itemize deductions?

ANSWER

The BIDaWIZ Team's Answer:

You can only claim real estate taxes as an itemized deduction on Schedule A of your form 1040. If you don't itemize deductions and rather claim the standard deduction, then you cannot claim your real estate taxes. There was a period in 2008 and 2009 where you could include a portion of your property taxes as an itemized deduction even if you claimed the standard deduction, but that period has since expired.
