Can a personal trainer claim cosmetic surgery as a tax deduction?

ANSWER

Expert Thomas Graham iii's Answer:

It will depend on what particular surgery you areinterested in and what the need is for the surgery.  In the vast majority of cases, the IRS hassaid that “you may not deduct funeral or burial expenses, over-the-countermedicines, toothpaste, toiletries, cosmetics, a trip or program for the generalimprovement of your health, or most cosmeticsurgery.” (IRS Publication 502)  Eventhen your total medical bills must exceed 7.5% of your AGI and only the amountthat exceeds is eligible to be part of your itemized deductions.
