I am the bookkeeper for a tree trimming service for residential customers in Tacoma Washington. Generally, our customers will direct us to remove diseased trees that are too close to their homes. However, in some instances, we are asked to remove trees that are close to the power lines, which is a safety hazard. Do we need to collect sales tax?
ANSWER
Expert Matthew Peterson's Answer:
All of this tree trimming is a retail activity, regardless of the specific reason for cutting the limbs.
The tree trimming services that you're company is offering clients is considered a retail activity, regardless of the specific reason for cutting the trees. Thus, you must collect sales tax.
