I was just hired as an ultrasound tech 30 miles from my home. I also am the sole proprietor of a Christmas tree farm that is at my home. If I were to hand out business cards to the patients I treat at the job I work and/or hang up fliers in that town, could I claim mileage for my commute?

ANSWER

The BIDaWIZ Team's Answer:

Yes, trips to advertise your company in the local community would serve a business purpose. As such, the mileage would be an eligible deduction, but must be documented and maintained for your tax records as per IRS Topic 511.
