If an individual that was in the US on an L or E visa receives a social security number (SSN), does the ssn expire when the visa expires? Can we continue filing partnership returns with it?
ANSWER
The BIDaWIZ Team's Answer:
The social security number never expires. However, if the ssn is restrictive (you know by looking on the card), then it may not be eligible to be used as the partner may no longer be authorized to work in the US. It depends on the intent of the partner. The partner should contact the ssa to determine the status. This is referenced in IRS Publication 519 and IRC Section 871.
