My mother has accumulated tax debts and this year we've supported her. We intend to claim her as a dependent on our tax return. However, we aren't sure if we can claim a dependent for a person that has tax debts? Do we become liable for those debts?

You will not be responsible for the tax debts of your dependents. Joint liability for tax debts typically only occurs when spouses file joint tax returns.
