My spouse died in 2004 and owed the IRS for back taxes. I've paid my own taxes but my ex-spouse's debts were put against me. If I remarried in 2012, will my new spouse be held accountable for taxes owed of the original spouse?

ANSWER

The BIDaWIZ Team's Answer:

If you have any tax liens against you, you and your future husband should file as married filing separate this year if you do in fact get married. This will prevent his tax return from being impacted by any liens held against you. You should also note that rules vary by state.
