My husband and I spent $4,000 on insulating our attic last September '09, in hopes of lowering our heating bills in our 120 year old home. The man that's doing our taxes said he didn't know of any tax break we could get for doing that. Has he missed something or not?

ANSWER

The BIDaWIZ Team's Answer:

See IRC 25C, and Form 5695. You may claim an "energy property credit"

on Form 5695. The credit equals 30% of the expenditure; "up to" $1,500.

So your credit equals $1,200 [30% of $4K].
