I work for a utility company in the supply chain organization. I work 3 days a week at the company offices and two days a week from home. I have a separate office in my house used exclusively for my work. Is this considered a business use of my home and can I deduct it? Also, can I deduct the hotel expenses I have each week when I spend the 3 days at the company offices?
ANSWER
The BIDaWIZ Team's Answer:
The home office to perform your job must be for your employer's convenience. Expenses associated with having a home office simply because it makes things easier for you and the company aren't deductible. Typically, employees that are provided with an office work-space by their employer aren't eligible for this deduction. Hotel and travel expenses are only deductible if it's related to a temporary work assignment which is generally less than one year. Work assignments in excess of one year are considered indefinite and not deductible.
