Unfortunately, you can claim the tuition and fees deduction only if your child was a dependent and reported as such on your tax return. Since he filed his return and likely claimed an exemption for himself, he is the only one that can claim the tuition and fees deduction. Please note that he can claim the deduction even if he hasn't already by filing an amended tax return.
