My husband died a few years ago and I'm just remembered to change my W4 form at work to Single instead of Married. The girl that does our payroll here at work is telling me that more taxes are being taken out of my check now. I didn't change anything but to single status. How can this be true?

ANSWER

Expert Linda Burroughs's Answer:

The tax withholding rate is higher for single taxpayers because the tax table for single individuals is higher.  The tables are published by IRS annually.  You may owe income tax if you do not have more withheld based on the filing status as Single instead of Married.
