I am an Assistant Professor in a University in the US, and I am on a H1-B visa. My question is, as a non-citizen, what is the recommended way to fill in my W-4 given my visa status?
ANSWER
Expert Wray Rives's Answer:
US taxation is not based on citizenship, but rather on residency. Assuming you are living in the US for more than 183 days, you will still need to file a US tax return. The W4 is only to determine how much income tax to withhold from your paycheck, I would suggest you follow the instructions on the form and file for the appropriate number of withholding allowances as what you will qualify for. The allowances are generally based on marrital status and number of dependents.
